The people driving past you toward the bridge are missing most of it.

Thursday nights belong to the vineyard lawn
The most consistent standing event in town is Acoustic Sunset at Sanctuary Vineyards. The Jarvisburg location hosts a summer wine-down featuring acoustic music and wine tastings every Thursday on the Sanctuary lawn, a casual event where kids and pets are welcome, and you can bring a chair or picnic blanket and settle in on the farmland where the Wright story began.
Two things worth knowing that the tourist blogs skip. First, this is on the mainland side of the sound, which means the sunset light hits the vines from the west rather than getting blocked by dune line, and the humidity drops noticeably by 7 p.m. Second, the free special events welcome picnic baskets, kids, and pets, and wine is available for purchase on site. Bring dinner. Nobody is going to stop you.
The main tasting room is on-site and open daily 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and offers tastings and tours. If you have out-of-town family visiting and want to show them a version of the Outer Banks that is not a rental turnover Saturday, this is the easiest reservation you never have to make.
What the Cotton Gin fire changed for the mainland

The flagship Jarvisburg Cotton Gin location remains closed following a fire, but wines from Sanctuary Vineyards are still available at the in-store wine bars in the Corolla, Duck, and Nags Head shops. The Cotton Gin has three charming locations in Corolla, Duck and Nags Head and is rebuilding the original in Jarvisburg.
For residents, this has a practical consequence. The retail anchor that used to pull mainland foot traffic into that corner of Caratoke Highway is offline. The winery next door has absorbed the role. That is why the vineyard lawn feels busier on a Tuesday afternoon than it used to, and why the tasting room is doing more of the day-to-day walk-in traffic than it did five years ago. You will find them at 7069 Caratoke Highway, which is close enough to Sanctuary that a Wednesday-Thursday two-night rotation covers most of the week without repeating a menu or a parking lot.

The Historic Jarvisburg Colored School Association's stated mission is the preservation and dissemination of information about the history and culture of the Colored People and Schools in Currituck County, North Carolina from 1868 to the 1950s.

It is listed on the 2026 North Carolina Festival Guide alongside the state's other 10/10 fall festivals.
Why residents should care in July: last year's CrabDaddy fell on a Saturday when both the KDH and Corolla rental turnovers were also running, and the intersection at Aydlett Road and Caratoke got backed up by early afternoon. If you want to be at the festival at open, park at BJ's or a neighbor's, and walk the last stretch. If you want to skip it, plan your grocery run before 11 a.m.
Two other Sanctuary events worth putting on the same calendar page while you are looking.
